Marin Humane/Marin Friends of Ferals Career Cat Program
Career Cats in Need of Work
Have an enclosed backyard, a shed, barn, horse stable, ranch or farm? Do you like cats (especially for their rodent control abilities) but are allergic? Marin Humane and Marin Friends of Ferals (MFF) are committed to giving outdoor cats a second chance and our Career Cat program does just that.
What Are Career Cats?
Are outdoor, under-socialized cats that are not able to be adopted as typical pets. They are generally shy stray, feral or semi-feral cats that prefer little to no human contact, making them unsuitable as indoor pets. If surrendered to a shelter, these cats would not likely be adoption candidates.
Career Cats not only provide an eco-friendly solution to rodent control by becoming working cats on your property, but by adopting ferals you will be saving the lives of cats that may not have other options. As an added bonus, there is no adoption fee!
While caring for Career Cats is easy, you will be responsible for them for their lifetime. They must be given daily food and water and be provided with adequate protection against the elements and predators.
What We Provide:
When you adopt cats from our Career Cat program, all cats will be:
• Spayed or neutered
• Tested for FELV (feline leukemia) and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus)
• Rabies vaccinated
• Vaccinated for distemper (FVRCP)
• Microchipped
Common Questions About Career Cats:
How many cats will be relocated to me?
We have found that single cat relocations are not as successful as relocating ferals in pairs. Having a buddy seems to increase the likelihood they will remain on the property. So depending on the size of your property we recommend cats be adopted in pairs or more.
How long are the cats confined before being released?
It takes about 3 weeks for the cats to acclimate to the sights, sounds and smells of their new outdoor home. MFF sets up the relocation cages and supplies you with everything needed for the holding period,
guiding you through the process before, during and after release.
What if one of my feral cats becomes sick or injured?
You are taking responsibility for the well-being of the cats but should you need assistance transporting your injured feline to your veterinarian for medical treatment, MFF will trap the cat and assist you in the delivery and return of your cat.
How dos the process of adopting Career Cats work?
1) Simply fill out a Career Cat application online at MarinHumane.org. or contact MFF at marinferals.org. If cats are not currently available, you’ll be placed on a call-back list.
2) MFF will make a site visit to your property to determine placement of the holding cages.
3) If your property is suitable, MFF will deliver the cats to you, set up the cages and provide you with food and all supplies for the holding period.
They are available to address any questions or concerns you may have at any time.
We are always in need of outdoor homes for unadoptable felines. Please tell your family, friends and neighbors about our unique program.
